Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
