Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
