Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Police then found numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police say preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.

"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.

City officials stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.

A senior official commented the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.

"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
